The other day a dear friend of mine shared that she had changed the way she answered the question, "How are you today?" When I heard her answer, it changed forever the way I think about that perfunctory question we ask our friends and family and, well, almost everyone we meet! I wonder, how do you answer this?
My answer has always been "Great!" or "Good!!" or "Doin' OK!" Why have I used these answers without thinking?? Because I don't really want to think about how I truly do feel, let alone share that with someone else. It's so much easier just saying those positive words, and truth be told, I do believe that when I say them often enough, I do feel better than I might have felt before the question. Does this make sense?
However, this winter I have been concentrating on what is GOOD in my life and what I have to be THANKFUL for. There are have been some recent personal setbacks and rather than dwell on them, I believe this is the best way to remind myself how really lucky I actually am!
Therefore, when my friend answered my question of "How are you today?" with "GRATEFUL!" I was pretty gobsmacked. What a glorious way to remind myself so often that I truly am blessed and grateful for many many things.
So, the next time you see me, please ask me how I am!! I am a work in progress, but I hope to be able to tell you "grateful" and remind myself of at least one happiness in my life I am grateful for.
